“Coming To Carry Me Home” Thaddeus Stevens was A fierce opponent of slavery and discrimination against African-Americans. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania After he moved to Lancaster, PA, he became activein the Underground Railroad, not only defending people believed to be fugitive slaves, but coordinating the movements of those seeking freedom.A 2003 renovation at his former home in Lancaster disclosed that there was a hidden cistern, attached to the main building by a concealed tunnel, in which escaped slaves hid.
